A dated look at copper golem sorting, useful shelves and the new role of copper equipment in Java 1.21.9.

Historical release: September 30, 2025 — Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.9. The Copper Age gave copper a much larger everyday role through equipment, decoration, storage and copper golems. This is an archive of that release, based on its official notes.

Our screenshots show these features in Java 26.2.

Make a sorting room you can understand

A copper golem takes items from copper chests and looks for ordinary or trapped chests that are empty or already contain the same item. It carries at most sixteen items from a stack at once. That is a useful small-room helper, but it is not a machine that invents your preferred storage categories.

Start with one input copper chest and three nearby destinations. Put a sample of the intended item in each destination, then label them. Keep the walk between containers open. Avoid leaving an empty “miscellaneous” chest in the middle of this first layout, because an empty destination can accept an item you meant to send elsewhere.

Choose a modest task, such as filing three common building materials. When the layout is easy to follow, add another destination. This makes the room's logic visible to the player as well as giving the golem a simpler place to work.

In this small example, the copper chest started with eight oak planks, eight cobblestone and eight carrots. Each labeled destination already held one matching item. The golem moved the supplied items, leaving nine in each destination and an empty input chest.

Treat aging as a design choice

Copper golems oxidize, and an unwaxed fully oxidized golem becomes a statue. Waxing preserves a chosen state; an axe can remove oxidation and eventually restore a statue to a working golem. Decide whether a particular golem is part of your storage routine or part of the room's decoration.

Shelves hold three item stacks and swap items through their front slots. Powered connected shelves can exchange a larger portion of the hotbar. That suggests a useful workbench arrangement: keep one set of building supplies close to the exit, with a clearly different place for returning tools.

Copper tools also created a practical step beyond stone in speed and durability. They do not make every later material redundant. Think of the update as a set of small workshop improvements: a material you can spend on early equipment, a helper for a limited sorting job and storage that puts frequently used items in view.

Give each addition one job first. A compact, readable workroom is more useful than a huge storage hall whose behavior you cannot explain.
