Historical release: March 25, 2025 — Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.5. Spring to Life concentrated on the ordinary Overworld: its animals, vegetation and atmosphere. The official release notes describe the release as it shipped; this is an archive article about those changes.
Our screenshots show these features in Java 26.2.

Give a familiar place a local character
Pigs, cows and chickens gained warm and cold variants alongside the familiar temperate forms. The biome determines a newly spawned animal's variant. Breeding chooses a parent's variant instead, so bringing an animal home does not require rebuilding the whole farm in its original biome. Warm chickens lay brown eggs and cold chickens lay blue ones.

For a small farm project, reserve two pens and connect them to one working path. Use differences in shelter, ground cover or fencing to give each pen a character without making the animals hard to reach. A good-looking farm still needs a convenient gate and somewhere to put its supplies.

Work on the ground between buildings
Wildflowers, leaf litter and firefly bushes offer different kinds of detail. Wildflowers can fill a soft meadow edge. Leaf litter can be layered and oriented on a block space. Firefly bushes produce glowing particles when it is dark. Falling leaf particles and new ambient sounds add movement and atmosphere beyond the placed blocks.
Pick one short path for a makeover. Keep the center clear, cluster ground decoration beside trees and leave occasional bare patches so the edge does not become a uniform carpet. Around water, make a small sitting spot that is pleasant to approach in daylight as well as after sunset. Decorative glow should not replace the practical lights you use to see the route.
Make a reason to walk home
The lodestone recipe changed to use an iron ingot surrounded by chiseled stone bricks, making it a more accessible navigation project. A little marker house or sheltered arrival point gives that useful block a visible place in the settlement.
These suggestions work as small improvements to a lived-in base: an animal pen, a path edge and a recognizable return point. Choose one corner that feels unfinished and give it a purpose before spreading decoration everywhere.
